Re: laptop screen blank (i915)

I just submitted this is a new bug.

If I boot into the recovery console and use the vesa driver in xorg.conf, the X windows start correctly, although into 1024x768 resolution. This is running fine until I hit Ctrl+Alt+Fn (or Ctrl+Alt+Del) which results in a blank screen and a freeze.

If I boot into the recovery console and use the intel driver on xorg.conf, the X windows do not even start. The screen goes blank and the computer freezes. I saw some complaints when booting about intel_agp:
  "unknown symbol intel_agp_enabled (err -16)"
"gave up waiting for init of module intel_agp"
  "unknown symbol intel_max_stolen (err -16)"
Somebody on the web suggested to blacklist intel_agp by adding a line
  blacklist intel_agp
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and updating the initramfs by
  sudo update-initramfs -u
This removed the error messages about intel_agp but the computer still freezes. I am attaching Xorg.0.log that was generated during this freeze and the xorg.conf used. I don't see what happened.

Thanks Don. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work here. When I
start X (with the xforcevesa option in grub), the screen goes
blank and the computer freezes. The only way I can get to X is to
copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafeX to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then
boot into the recovery mode. If I boot normally, the X comes up
but the screen goes blank and freezes about 5 min after I start X.
    Wierd...

In grub, edit your kernel line to include the phrase
"xforcevesa" (without quotes) at the end of the line. I also
remove the "quiet" and "splash" options so I can see the boot
text, but that's optional. Once you get it booted up, then
you can permanently edit your grub options. This works for my
VPCY2 with integrated graphics, though it is not ideal.

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. The screen does not work
out of the box at all. If I go to the recovery mode and
check the error messages, there is one that says "no
screens found". If I attempt to startx either from the
command line or from the recovery mode by choosing the
failsafeX video mode, the computer freezes. Any ideas ?

Try Ubuntu 10.10, they've fixed it to make
auto-configuration of external screens easier (up to
1920x1200). If it doesn't work out of the box, try to
run the safe-graphics mode once it's installed, there
is a very simple reconfiguration tool that will find
                out about your screens...

                   Dear all.

I know that this problem has been discussed many
                times but I still
cannot make it to work. I just purchased SONY Vaio
                VPCY2 and installed
Ubuntu 10.04. I have the integrated Intel graphics
                (i915). I get no
output on the laptop screen and, at the same time,
                a beautiful hi-res
output on my external 21" lab monitor. The tricks
                with adding
i915.modeset=0 or 1 in grub don't work (the former
                freezes up the
                   laptop
with two LEDs above the Delete key blinking). Did
                some of you make it
work ? I would greatly appreciate your guidance to
                fix this.

                   Thanks a lot,
