Thanks Don. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work here. When I start 
X (with the xforcevesa option in grub), the screen goes blank and the 
computer freezes. The only way I can get to X is to copy 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafeX to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then boot into 
the recovery mode. If I boot normally, the X comes up but the screen 
goes blank and freezes about 5 min after I start X. Wierd...
