Thanks for the feedback, Clem! I guess it turned out better than I had
thought. I was nervous -- I wasn't just representing myself, I was
representing the Linux Mint community. I do not want to make the
community look bad.
As I said, this was a test and I'm going to rerecord the segment before
I publish it for real. I'll incorporate what you told me here about LSI,
mintInstall and Mint's Software Portal.
And improving my knowledge of Mint is definitely something I need to
work on. I hadn't admitted this earlier, but I started using Mint
exactly one day before I volunteered to help with the podcast. I've
hopped through several distros -- Ubuntu, Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva,
and my eeePC has Xandros -- before I got to Mint. So I will work on
that.
But there will still be things I miss as I go along, regarding Linux as
well as Mint. User feedback will help keep me on track, and I can
mention these omissions in the next week's broadcast. I'm sure we have
some brilliant users out there, who will be happy to set me straight
when I'm wrong or neglect to mention something.
You mentioned the user guide, but the link you included gave me a 404
error. I would like to find that guide -- that will definitely help me
out as I'm getting content together for each show.
One of my personal goals is to show Windows users that you really can
use Linux, and that it's not difficult. While Windows bashing is fun, I
try to avoid that and just show the positive aspects of Linux,
especially when it's better/easier than Windows.
I came to Mint because I've been looking for the easiest Linux distro
for Windows users to get started with. Ubuntu is easy, and Kubuntu looks
a lot like Windows. But the codecs aren't there. Sure, it's easy to
install them, but Windows users will complain about that one extra click
you have to do in order to install the codecs.
With Mint, the codecs are already there and even though the desktop is
Gnome, it still looks like a Windows screen. So while Mint is a great
distro, it also fits perfectly with my own personal (and admittedly,
Quixotic) goal to show Windows users that Linux is not only not
difficult, it's easy -- often easier than Windows.
Thanks again for the feedback, Clem. I'll rerecord the segment and
continue to look for music. I've found a site or two where you can get
free music, it's just a matter of finding some instrumental pieces that
will work for our show. These sites have thousands and thousands of
songs, so it could take some time to listen to enough to find pieces
that I can use. If anyone else has music suggestions, please let me
know.
And with the modular approach I'm taking, I can continue to record more
main segments even if it takes me two or three weeks to find music.
Linux Action Show is currently my favorite podcast (since Linux Reality
closed down). I think those guys do a great job, though they do get a
little too exuberant for my taste at times. I'll really have
accomplished something if I can do well enough that you're looking
forward to this show even more than theirs.
