Re: Features that could be in 0.60

Hi Joerg and Marcos,

I like to start of this email by mentioning that I will be travelling in
about a week or two and will be quite busy in May as I am moving to a new
city. So my involvement in uNav 0.60 won't be as much as before. With that
said, I like to say what I had in mind for 0.60.

*1. Convergence* - Devs: Nik

With the advent of Ubuntu Tablet and the whole Unity 8 inching more and
more towards the Desktop, convergence is a hot topic and something we
should get started with in 0.60. It might be even take up to 0.61 to get it
finished as it involves a lot of work ranging from design to implementation
and testing. This will be something I will put my full effort to get it
done. We will need to think about keyboard shortcuts, focus states, and
converge individual components. For instance, the welcome wizard could use
a slightly altered behavior in the tablet landscape mode. I would like some
implementation from you guys on this.

Great. Good to hear...
*2. Voice Management *- Devs: Marcos(JSON) & Nik(qml)

Marcos had the idea for a better voice management. At the moment we ship
all voices (for all languages) within the app. Marcos had the idea of just
shipping the default english voice in the app while allowing for the other
voices to be downloaded when the user installs the app. This will reduce
the app's footprint from 4.5 Mb to maybe 500 Kb. Also we can enable
male/female voices for each language. This feature will first require us to
finalize a JSON structure and then make the appropriate work in the QML
side to download the voice and use that.

Also great to hear. I think that before going into that step, we should have a brainstorm on how to even improve voice indications. Meaning finalize the indication structure with some improvements by adding additional ones.

*@*Joerg, In the features that you listed, I suggest you work on what
interests you and is also possible for 0.60. Personally I think that
targeting both vector maps and offline tile caching in the same release is
a bit ambitious as it involves a lot of work and invasive code change. I
think if we get either of these features in 0.60, that alone would be
amazing.

There should be a decision on which way to take. I will discuss with marcos.

I personally don't see a need a "save-favorite" routes features. Here are
my reasoning for that,
Me neither. Just a test ;-)

- If user is using a certain route (favorite) frequently, then I would
expect him to remember that route after a while thereby nullifying the need
for such a feature. Also, the feature is a bit rigid since it fixes the
start and stop points. While the favorite locations is more flexible and
superior by allowing flexibility in this regard.
- At the moment, you can pretty much simulate this feature, by pressing on
a favorite location in the search page and navigating to it.

As for the quick access to POIs for active route, this requires a good
discussion on how to introduce that feature in uNav. Surely it is obvious
that it would be an additonal popup in the route popup. However we will
need to brainstorm on whether we allow users to set what POIs they would
like to see in the Car, Bicycle and Walking mode. For instance, the logical
things to show while using a car would be Gas Stations, Car Repair etc. But
what if I have an electric car ;) ? What I am trying to imply is that may
be users might want to decide what POIs they want to add in the route
popup. And if we agree to that, we need to brainstorm about the design for
that.
That's right. I think there will be some easy ways to let the user decide from the poi list.
It will be a helpful feature.

Can you explain your purpose for the night view? How does it help users?
Why is it necessary for unav to include such a feature?

By a car and navigate at night. Youll get the idea ;-)

Kind regards,
Nekhelesh

Joerg

hi guys,

now that 0.59 is in qa queue, i would like toshare some ideas on
features and move towards features that could be prepared for 0.6.

The overall design changes are great and are the perfect base for the
ongoing development. I really like what we have achieved. Great!

I had some thoughts on new features that I want to share with you and
hope to get some feedback.

1. of course, vector maps. i do not know if we can make this to 0.6 but
i would like to summarize all the possible solutions with you, so that
we can start working on that. i think marcos has already some ideas.

This of course is a longer way and there are several other things we
could achieve in a short term solution:

2. night view: - include a dark theme and adjust map colors for a night
view.
3. Add niks convergence features and improve them.
4. quick access to pois for active routes.
5. gpx-tracking
6. save favorite routes and recall them.
7. enhance offline tile caching
