I agree that's a problem, but it's one that has always been there, and not something I was trying to fix with this merge.  For example:
Job 1 [current points to 20130322]
 - download completes
 - job starts
Job 2 [current points to 20130322.1 due to a respin]
 - download goes to the same location.

Your workaround makes sense, but would require modifying every single job to point at a new path for finding the iso.  I think there are some better ways to do this, such as keeping all the downloads and handing out a link to it from a temporary location from the job.  But rather than bikeshed about it in this MP I'd rather discuss that later when we talk about merging the tools and how the new merger of them should really work.

As a side note, one of the advantages to keeping this behavior and not breaking it for now, is that it doesn't force us to redownload the image once it moves to current.
