Clicking on a contact in the Contacts pane will change the text in the
Chat pane. This works as expected. However, selecting another contact in
the Contacts pane using the arrow keys will not change the text in the
Chat pane to the conversation with the newly selected contact.

This is shown in the attached screenshot. I clicked on 'bassdeal' in the
Contacts pane and began to talk to him in the Chat pane. I then clicked
on 'bassdeal' again in the Contacts pane, and used the down arrow key to
move my selection to the 'testmira' contact; but the Chat pane did not
update to my conversation with 'testmira'.

In other words, it appears that a change in the Chat pane is only
triggered by a click event in the Contacts pane. It would be great if a
focus event (which encompasses clicking, moving the selection with the
arrow keys, etc.) in the Contacts pane would be the trigger for changing
the Chat pane.
