introduces one additional step for the user. Why? I still like Joerg's idea
where the search action just opens the search page and the user can
immediately start searching for his location.

I don't like this. The reason is simple. In uNav we already have the Page
Header, Zoom Button, Bottom Panels (during navigation) and now this center
pos button covering the map ... this will just make the map small and
crowded with stuff floating on top of it. Please let's just leave it in the
main header. Just so you know, google maps doesn't show the zoom buttons
since they have pinch zoom..so its one less stuff covering their maps. In
uNav we don't have luxury.

Can I ask you something? Did you try branch at my
https://code.launchpad.net/~nik90/unav/new-menu-navigation/+merge/292059? I
see it offer a few benefits over your mockup which are,

1. The search function is super easily accessible. One step and that's it.
No more digging through several steps to get to it.

2. The Nearby Destination is shown only when you are navigating to another
place.

3. The menu action is a perfect place to house the actions like
"Favorites", "Coordinates" and "Cancel Route" and "nearby Destination" ..
it seems logical which is why Joerg and I agreed to it.
