Some thoughts about the current state of the mentoring program and the reception

Dear Nicolas and Daniel,

here are some thoughts about the current state of the reception and
the mentoring program : inexistant...

many reasons can explain that but the main ones are :
-> a real lack of time by the people at the reception which
creates some way too long delay in the processing of ne requests but a
disastrous follow-up on current mentoring
-> a big turnover in the mentees
-> a lack of new mentors

I do think the first point is the biggest blocker, and that if we can
solve it, both the second and the third point will go away quite
soon...

So let's start with improving the reception of new requests and the
handling of applications. I think the usage of bzr is still good. But
we can extend it a bit, by creating a new file , named by the LP id,
for every applications, where we write down all contacts with the
mentee and the mentor (once they have been matched). This file must
not content private date, since it will be visible by anyone (in bzr),
but just the date and the type of contact. By instance we should avoid
to say : I have asked dholbach to mentor johon_doe, since it is the
right for a mentor to refuse to mentor one mentee... But we should
write that a mentor has been contacted.
Meanwhile we should send on the mentoring mailing list that we have
contacted this mentor, and why. Since the archive of the current list
are private, there is no privacy issue.
I am about to ask to get the same kind of privacy on the LP mailing
list, so that we can use it (once it is done...).

With the departure of Charlie there is a real need for at least 2 new
people in the mentoring reception. I can send the email asking people
to step up... Any objections ?

Please let me know,

   Christophe

PS: I would like to have your opinions on that before starting to
match mentors/mentees again, so that we can you the new way if it is
accepted...
