Free Software Group Meeting

Here's the mailing that went out to the freshmen we've rounded up recently
announcing tonights meeting.

Greetings, Future Engineers!

You're getting this announcement because either you were really interested
in free software, or you didn't know what you were signing. :) Whatever the
reason is, we're glad you took the opportunity to speak with us at the
engineerFEST or the Mountain Lair. It's important to start meeting people as
soon as you can when you come to college and having a strong network of
contacts definitely helps after graduation when you enter the work place. If
you any of you should chose to become members of our group you will gain
immediate access to many contacts throughout the college and university.
Additionally, membership in a group such as this looks great on a resume.
Involvement in extracurricular activities is one of the most important parts
of a great job application.

The Free Software Group is probably the newest student organization on the
WVU campus, but if you look at our activities so far, you wouldn't think
that! For example, in the month that we've been an official student
organization we've helped spawn a new Computer Science course which is
focused around Free and Open Source software. Look for that in the Spring of
2009 listed as a CS-493 (Special Topics) course. Regarding our long term
goals, we're working toward OpenOffice being installed on all computers
campus-wide (we've already met with officials from the Office of Information
Technology and have been told that the White Hall computer lab will be
adopting Open Office when it reopens: our first victory!) Together, and with
your help, White Hall's adoption is what will bring Open Office to the
Downtown Library before the end of this school year!

At our meeting on Tuesday we'll introduce the current members of the group,
give a brief history of what started it, explain where we'd like to see the
group going, present a list of our current goals, and expound on our future
planned events. We'll finish up with an open-floor discussion and
introduction of new topics. The meeting is planned to take about an hour.

Thanks to The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
we'll be providing free pizza and drinks!

We haven't been assigned a room yet, so we'll meet in the Mineral Resources
Building's main atrium -- outside of G13 (the huge lecture hall at the
bottom of the stairwell). We'll then migrate to a near room from there.
Below is a link to a map showing the location of the meeting place.

If you have any questions, email tim@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or
gbelknap@xxxxxxxxx for more information.

Hope to see you all there,

---Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
