Since you've decided on that, [and mainly for the purposes of recording
this on the mailing list] - I'd take a look at pinax.  Having a 'social
network' setup for the students will be a very PC way of allowing
children the ability to 'network' online within a defined environment of
schoolfriends and tutors.

One school in Bath, England found lots of success in using the Social
Network tool 'elgg' in the school.  Children soon realised that material
they were placing online was public information, and provides a sandbox
before the children go out and put photos and stuff up on facebook and
other similar sites.
