[Bug 1992463] Re: Totem can't play video captured with the "Take a Screenshot" tool

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 22.10 (kinetic) reached end-of-life on July 20, 2023

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested
in discussing it anymore. But if you are then please upgrade to the
latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still
present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling
us which new version it is in.

If you do reproduce it, please run

$ GST_DEBUG='*:5' GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 totem /path/to/screencast.webm |&
tee gst.log

And attach gst.log. Even better, attach the screencast video itself. You
may be experiencing a buggy hardware decoder.

The screen caster is built into GNOME shell as a JavaScript service. It
has a list of GStreamer pipelines it tries to use to record the screen.

** Changed in: gstreamer1.0 (Ubuntu)

Title:
Totem can't play video captured with the "Take a Screenshot" tool

Status in gstreamer1.0 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
If I create a 5-second video of my desktop with the "Take a
Screenshot" tool (as an aside, is that tool built into gnome-shell now
or something? I couldn't figure out what executable the app icon
corresponds to, i.e., I couldn't find the desktop file for it )
and then open the resulting webm file which causes it to be opened in
the Videos app, i.e., Totem, the video as shown on the screen is all
scrunched up to the left and in monochrome rather than color. If I
play the same video in mplayer it looks fine. See the attached
screenshot which shows a Totem window and an mplayer window with the
same video file open in each.
