Are there any logs? Can you try opening the media file using Totem from
the CLI?

$ GST_DEBUG='*:5' GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 totem /path/to/your/video-file |&
tee gst.log

And attach gst.log here.

   playing only audio of an mp4 file

  Totem is not playing mp4 files. Only sound is heard but video is not.
  Other media players like VLC and Xine play it quite well.
