How did you find about that solution?

The Xlib commect was an attempt to find in an easy way if connection to
a display works; Qt4 aborts if it cannot connect, which is not what we
want.

It is probably not a good definitive solution, so we should find another
one. For now, though, it is important that it works for you. It behaves
differently for people at debian/ubuntu, though.
