Message #00001
progressive rendering and perceived loading speed
Hi list,
During the vUDS session in which we discussed plans for the browser, one
of the issues that was mentioned is a supposed regression in the way
pages are progressively rendered while being loaded.
It seems that when we were using Qt5 beta1, pages started to display
faster than they do now (we’re using Qt 5.0 now, and will upgrade to
5.0.1 soon). At the time the browser used in the ubuntu-touch image was
snowshoe, but we’ve recompiled it against Qt 5.0 and we’re observing the
same issue as with our custom browser. We haven’t been able to quantify
the issue.
It was suggested that maybe progressive rendering was turned off, or
delayed, but in my tests I’m seeing the pages start rendering before
they’re fully loaded, so this seems to be working. Could it be that a
change in Qt/QtWebKit between the beta1 and 5.0 final releases affected
the timing of when pages start rendering?
Speed is mostly about perception, so if we can somehow make the loading
of pages feel faster, it’s a clear gain from a UX standpoint.
Any suggestions/pointers welcome!
Cheers,
Olivier
