Please allow me to introduce myself ...

Hi all,

I am the new team member. Hopefully, we'll make nice things together -
well, you already have.

I'm here after meeting compiledkernel on Ubuntu forums, after discovering
that we shared a passion - Games, and Linux games in particular. Like you,
I strive to make Linux gaming more known to the public, more popular, more
friendly. UGA seems like the right platform for such ideas.

So, let me introduce myself. Here's the semi-long version. Some of it is
purely personal, professional and irrelevant, but you might want to know
about the new kid on the block, apart from the fact he likes games.

I'm male, 30.5, married, working as Linux Systems Expert / Systems
Programmer in a big company (Think IBM, Google, HP, Intel, one of those
:)), hacking and optimizing the kernel. Used to work as a physicist in
medical industry; this is my university education, btw. Linux started as a
hobby and turned into a profession. I'm also a certified LSA, got LPIC-1
and am working on LPIC-2, got the first exam done, and SANS GSEC. I'm
skilled in quite a few programming languages, although more from the
scientific point of view than pure coding.

Linux-wise, I'm trying to bring Linux to the masses any which way
possibly, but mainly by patience and thorough work. To this end, I'm
writing a series of books on Linux. I'm also maintaining a website,
dedoimedo.com, which some of you may have visited before. It's a fairly
popular site, with 5,000 daily hits on average and spikes up to 20,000 on
good days.

My favorite distros are Ubuntu and openSUSE on desktop, CentOS on (home)
server, I work mainly with SLES (and some Redhat), and have used, tested
and reviewed more than 100 distros.

Games-wise, have played them since I got dexterity in both my thumbs.
Naturally, most of it revolves around DOS and Windows, but I have recently
been paying more and more attention to Linux gaming, which is where our
paths cross.

Like other Linux topics, I think the Linux gaming should be advanced with
care and love and patience, mainly among the Windows users, since Linux
users hardly need any convincing. I believe the bulk of effort should be
placed where the popularity and awareness to Linux is the least. I also
think that any crusader-style approach is counter-productive to the cause.

I hope to bring more focus to Linux gaming via my own work at the website,
community effort in various forums, including gaming forums where I
actively participate, but also, if possible, working with developers. As a
crude example, well, quite a few games lack PR, beginning with websites
via poor documentation. Furthermore, some genres are overdeveloped, while
others are neglected. Quite afew Linux games lack a storyline, which makes
them seem shallow.

I hope to change this / see this changed.

That would be it for my first mail. I hope I was clear and cohorent
enough. Hopefully, we can do nice things together.

Cheers,
Dedoimedo
