Re: naming and tagging system

Hello!

I have my photos on Fotopic: http://jesper.fotopic.nl
And here's my personal website, it doesn't contain much yet, just a description of a trip to Ethiopia, in Dutch: http://www.jesperdj.nl

I must admit that I'm not using Ubuntu for most photography things - I use Photoshop CS3 on Windows Vista.

I organize my photos manually. I always shoot RAW with my Canon EOS 5D, and I store all my original RAW files in a directory structure with a directory for each month named "yyyymm" (four digits for the year, two for the month). Those directories contain subdirectories for each day, named "dd" (two digits). For example:

C:\Photos\EOS5D\200807\01
C:\Photos\EOS5D\200807\02
C:\Photos\EOS5D\200807\03
...
C:\Photos\EOS5D\200807\31
C:\Photos\EOS5D\200808\01
etc.

I rename the RAW files to the format: yyyymmdd-nnnn.cr2, where "yyyymmdd" is the date (year, month, day) and "nnnn" is a four-digit sequence number, starting at 0001 each day. By doing it that way, each photo gets a unique name and I can easily find the date at which I shot the photo. I backup all my original RAW files on an external harddisk.

regards,
Jesper

Do you have a complex system involving the mayan calendar and an abacus? I'd previously just been using the camera's file names, but that's become an issue. I used to have a camera that reset its numbering every time so I ended up with a lot of files named the same thing. My current camera does consecutive naming, but my dad has the same brand camera so we're running into duplicate file names again. I've been going through and using pyrenamer to change some of the file names, but without any sort of a system. Unfortunately that old camera also reset the time so the exif dates on those pictures are all off. I stumbled on this while looking for something on F-spot: http://exiflow.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page It looks interesting and I might start using that for my file naming.
