NZ Response to Samoa, Tonga, Philippines & Indonesia: Update 20091002 07:30
SITUATION
Several events occuring at the same time in this part of the world. Cluster
is self-activating to offer its support if it is requested of responding
agencies. Will proceed as if this was an exercise in activating
emergent/spontaneous volunteers if this request does not eventuate.
RESPONSE FOCUS
Focus is on engineering GIS layers that could support other applications
that are being used.
Provide capacity if request for technical support eventuates.
INFLUENCING FACTORS
Cluster members don't have the facilities to provide on-site Sahana support.
We don't have the networks to the INGOs based here (Esp. Oxfam NZ) and NZ
Red Cross that are actively responding.
Reputational risk if we are seen to be hindering or interfering with the
response.
ACTIONS TAKEN
Lots of Twitter noise #sahana, attempting to recruit more dev/tech support
staff. Lots of hits to NZ Cluster Launchpad team (e.g. local mailing list).
So far, little of this has translated into sign ups. This may be due to the
fact it's a two step process. E.g. signing up to the team means signing up
to Launchpad.
Respere has offered their data centre at no cost > Sahana as a Service to
serve needs as required.
Justin Lewis (Telecom NZ employee in personal capacity) has offered
additional server time in NZ & USA if required.
Tentative agreement from Eagle Technology (NZ ESRI vendor) to support GIS
data to be used for emergency purposes.
