Application icon goals and guidelines

Hi,

This thread is for establishing goals, reporting progress, and
exchanging feedback on Polly application icons. Georgi and
Joern are the main designers responsible for this, but anyone
interested in icon design can join in.

(those are the icons that identify Polly in the desktop, like in
the Unity launcher and panel, not to be confused with the
in-app icons)

1 ) There are three different icons needed:
"polly" (the main icon)
"polly-normal" (the panel icon in ordinary mode)
"polly-active" (the panel icon in notification mode)

2) The icons "polly-normal" and "polly-active" must be rendered
nicely in sizes 16, 22, and 24. The icon "polly" must be rendered
nicely in sizes 16, 22, 24, 32, 48, 96, 128, and 256.

3) In the absence of a file in the exact size, GTK scales the closest
file (giving priority to larger over smaller), so files for all sizes are
not needed. However, sometimes this results in blurring and/or
overall lack of crispness, specially on the smaller sizes. My personal
minimum recommendation is providing 16 and 24 for the panel
icons and 16, 24 and 48 for main icons.

4) The file with the largest size should always be fully scalable,
in other words, a SVG without embedded raster images. This is
to allow any large size without blurring.

5) If you provide both 22 and 24, the 24 one should always be
exactly the same as the 22 one, with an added 1px transparent
border.

6) For 0.94, I'd like to support the following themes OOTB:

hicolor
This is the default theme, always inherited by other themes
as a fallback option. It should follow the Tango guidelines.
(tends to fit nicely in Ubuntu and vanilla GNOME)

ubuntu-mono-dark
ubuntu-mono-light
Those two should only have the panel icons, as all the rest
should be inherited from hicolor.

elementary
I originally recommended hicolor for usage in elementary,
but seeing as the elementary icons tend to be just "Tango-ish",
not *fully* Tango compliant, I assume some changes are needed.

Oxygen
For fitting nicely into KDE.

Faenza
FS
Aw0ken
Popular themes for which we already have partial support.

Let's stop at those themes otherwise we'll never finish. :)

Joern, Georgi, and you make a report on which sizes of which
themes are we missing? Once we have a preliminary set, we can
ask the list for feedback.
