Future of Nightshade
After a lot of thought Trystan and I have concluded that the current
Nightshade code base is a dead end, being built up over the years on top
of the poorly designed Stellarium code base.
We surveyed a number of you on future feature directions for the project
and felt the only reasonable way forward was to abandon the constraints
of the current design.
Therefore we are shifting focus to a project to create a well designed
core simulation architecture. Once this is functional we will migrate
over Nightshade features to achieve feature parity. Then we will retire
the current code base.
This is of course a difficult approach, given the man hours and risks
involved. However we do not see any future in the Stellarium derived
code base, and a new architecture will provide many features by default
that currently all either would be or are hard to maintain custom code.
We will provide updates as we get further along in the planning. In the
mean time the plan is to conserve resources and only do minimal
maintenance on the current code base.
As you hopefully saw already, 11.7.1 was just released yesterday. We
will need to triage bugs that come in and decide how to deal with those
given the obsolescence of the current code base.
