[Bug 1346980] Re: ASSERT macro should not take an error code as argument
Since the ASSERT macro is used to check for internal inconsistencies
related to the developers and not the users of the library, I'll switch
to the standard C assert.

Bug description:
Since the ASSERT macro now stops the code, it is not necessary for it
to return an error code.
