looking at the current editing, we seem to like having a "the" prepended
to abbreviations like HDP and CHP.

Yes, they need the definite article when we talk about the parties - there
is only one of them. If you're following party initials with a plural noun
omit the article, with a singular noun switch to an indefinite article.
