I am able to adjust the brightness but not using default lenovo keys.
Using Kubuntu 9.10 KDE 4.3.4

I have added shortcut in KDE4 hotkey settings:
System settings-> Keyboard & Mouse -> Global Keyboard Shortcuts
There I have selected KDE component "KDE Daemon" and then I have set Decrease Screen Brightness to "Meta+Down", 
and likewise for increasing.

There is also way of adjusting brightness using batter plasma widget.
