Owais Lone proposed the following answer:
New GmailWatcher does not poll the gmail server at regular intervals. It
uses an active connection and waits for response from gmail server
resulting in instance notifications. It'll always notify about new mail
as soon as mail arrives and will not check/poll unless no activity
happens in gmail.
