You can start it the following:
G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all diodon

so you get more output what happens. This might help.

In case you haven't done so but one thing you could do is to update to
the newest stable Diodon from the ppa and see whether this works.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diodon-team/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
