[Bug 2128840] Re: Automatic Login with gdm3 amd64 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.3 [335 kB] is broken.
Hello,
In my case, the person upgraded GDM and linux-firmware, then turned off
his computer. At the next boot, he had a black screen.
When I checked the kernel logs, I saw issues with "amdgpu" and suspected a link with bug 2128883: I installed the previous version of linux-firmware and rebooted, but the black screen was still there.
I then tried to downgrade GDM3 and its lib, but the previous version was no longer in the repo. Because I was in command line, I didn't try to download the previous version from LP, and instead, I removed the "Automatic Login" entries from "/etc/gdm3/custom.conf" and rebooted. This fixed the issue.
The laptop owner never used the terminal, I don't see why
MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_EGL_STREAM would be set to 1.
If you think it is needed, I can ask to get access to the laptop again
to reproduce the issue and get more logs. Hopefully the issue is a
combination of "auto login" + specific HW or custom config, so it
doesn't affect too many people. (Also, if I was not there, I'm sure this
person would not have been able to report the issue here → what I mean
is that maybe it affects more people that we think.)

Bug description:
The following updated packaged were offered:
gdm3 gir1.2-gdm-1.0 libgdm1
Upon installing these updates and rebooting, the Desktop could not be
reached. Black screen only.
Subsequent restarts were not successful.
Shutting down works when triggered from Oracle VirtualBox v7.1.12.
Accessed Ubuntu's Recovery Console and removed the Automatic Login
entries from /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and rebooted.
Was able to reach the login screen and once logged in, was able to
reach the Desktop. This was repeated several times without any issues.
Conclusion is that Automatic Login with gdm3 amd64
46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.3 is broken. In this case, disabling Automatic
Login (Settings: System: Users) fixed the issue.
