Thanks, that fixed the sound. 

However, I've lost both displays on my USB C hub/docking stations. They
no longer appear as an option to extend or display the desktop. How can
I re-enable that?

  ASUS ROG Laptop does not (any longer) play sound out on internal
  laptop speakers, however it plays just fine on external devices.

  Volume is up and speakers are not muted. Switching devices plays sound
  just fine.
